NOTE VERBALE DATED DECEMBER 1986 FROM THE PERMANENT MISSION
OF MOROCCO TO THE UNITED NATIONS ADDRESSED
TO THE SECRETARY-GENERAL
The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco to the United Nations presents its compliments to the Secretary-General of the United Nations and has the honour to transmit to him herewith the statement made at Jiddah on 7 December 1986 by His Excellency Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada, Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference.
The Permanent Mission of the Kingdom of Morocco would be extremely grateful if the Secretary-General would arrange for the text of this statement to be circulated as a document of the Security Council relating to the situation in the Palestinian territories and other Arab territories, including Jerusalem, occupied by Israel.
ANNEX
Statement dated 7 December 1986 by His Excellency Syed Sharifuddin Pirzada,
Secretary-General of the Organization of the Islamic Conference, on the
situation in the occupied Arab territories
[Original: English]
The Zionist entity's continuing campaign of terror and oppression against the Palestinians in the occupied West Bank resulted in the cold-blooded murder of two Palestinian students and injuries to many others at Bir Zeit University last Tuesday. This inhuman act naturally provoked protest demonstrations throughout the occupied West Bank. The Israeli forces on Saturday opened fire at Palestinian youths protesting against the slaying of the students at Bir Zeit University, inflicting serious injuries on a large number of people.
The barbaric actions by the Zionist entity have sent shock-waves throughout the Islamic world and have aroused deep indignation throughout the world. The Islamic Ummah views the latest atrocities against its Palestinian brethren in the West Bank as a part of a premeditated Israeli campaign to undermine and liquidate the Palestinian will to resist illegal occupation and oppression. The reign of terror let loose by Israel is not only a gross violation of the Charter of the United Nations and international law, it is also an affront to the international community which has repeatedly denounced such actions in the past.
The Organization of the Islamic Conference expresses its deep indignation over and condemnation of the latest Israeli atrocities against the Palestinians in the occupied Palestinian territories. It wholeheartedly supports the initiative taken by Zimbabwe, the current Chairman of the Movement of Non-Aligned Countries and other nations for urgent action by the Security Council to take immediate measures to end the brutal and terroristic measures against the Palestinian people in the occupied territories.
The Security Council must discharge its responsibilities under the Charter of the United Nations and ensure that Israel is not allowed to persist in its nefarious designs against the Palestinian people. This can be achieved only through the termination of Israeli occupation of all Arab and Palestinian territories, including the Holy City of Jerusalem, and the restoration of the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people including their right to return, to self-determination and to an independent homeland in Palestine under the leadership of the Palestine Liberation Organization, their sole and legitimate representative.
