Israeli-Palestinian Wye River Memorandum – Letter from Palestine

Letter dated 9 February 1999 from the Permanent Observer

of Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the

Secretary-General

I write to you with regard to the letter addressed to you from the Permanent Representative of Israel to the United Nations on 1 February 1999 (S/1999/105).  The content of that letter, which follows a recent disturbing pattern of repetitive distortions and false statements, is regrettable and does not qualify a response at a time when the whole world is well aware of the reality of the state of the peace process and the responsibility the Israeli Government bears in this regard, especially the freezing of the Wye River Memorandum.  This pattern of distortion has reached a point of absurdity and it would be fruitless to become entangled in any sort of rebuttal.  Indeed, the response to the above-mentioned letter can be found in the clear positions reaffirmed by the international community as demonstrated recently by Member States through the resumption of the tenth emergency special session of the General Assembly.

I would be grateful if you would arrange to have the text of this letter distributed as a document of the General Assembly, under agenda items 39, 40 and 84, and of the Security Council.

(Signed)  Dr. Nasser AL-KIDWA

Ambassador

Permanent Observer of Palestine

to the United Nations
