11 December 2020

Letter dated 11 December 2020 from the Secretary-General addressed to the President of the Security Council

I have the honour to inform you of my intention to appoint Mr. Tor Wennesland (Norway) as the United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process and my Personal Representative to the Palestine Liberation Organization and the Palestinian Authority. He will succeed Mr. Nickolay Mladenov (Bulgaria). I should like to take this opportunity to express my gratitude to Mr. Mladenov for his dedication and effective leadership.

Mr. Wennesland currently serves as the Special Envoy of Norway for the Middle East Peace Process. In his capacity as Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, he would represent me in all meetings and structures involving the parties and the international community, as well as provide political guidance to the United Nations system. He would also coordinate all United Nations activities on the ground relating to the Middle East peace process, with the aim of ensuring that the contribution of the United Nations is fully integrated and coordinated.

I should be grateful if you would bring this matter to the attention of the members of the Security Council.

(Signed) António Guterre
