MEDIATOR LEAVES FOR MIDDLE EAST TOUR

(The following has been received at UN Headquarters from the Press Officer

with the UN Mediator for Palestine at Rhodes.)

The United Nations Mediator for Palestine, Count Folke Bernadotte, left Rhodes today (16 September) for a three-day tour of Beirut, Damascus, Baghdad and Jerusalem.  His Chief of Staff, General Aage Lundstrom, will join the Mediator in Beirut.

The significance of the trip will be the Mediator's personal inspection of Jerusalem, particularly in the light of the recent decision creating an extended neutral zone around the Red Cross area in the Holy City.  It will also be the Mediator's first visit to Baghdad.

Count Bernadotte departed aboard his special plane as the finishing touches were put on his 120-page report to the Secretary-General covering his mediation efforts, truce supervision, refugee aid and his activities to date.
