Brussels, 8 February 2005
S047/05

Javier Solana,

EU High Representative for the CFSP,

welcomes the outcome of the

Sharm el-Sheikh Summit

Javier Solana, European Union High Representative for the Common Foreign and Security Policy (CFSP), welcomed the holding and the outcome of the Summit between Prime Minister Sharon and President Abbas in the presence of President Mubarak and King Abdullah II held today in Sharm el-Sheikh (Egypt).

"I want to express my deep satisfaction for the successful holding of the Summit in Sharm el Sheikh today and the positive results it has achieved. The meeting proves that there is indeed an opportunity for peace and that the parties are determined to seize it in a spirit of understanding and cooperation. This opportunity must not be missed.

I strongly encourage Israeli and Palestinian leaders to pursue the way of dialogue and negotiation. The EU is committed to accompany the parties in their efforts with the aim of achieving, through the process laid out in the Roadmap, a negotiated two-state solution resulting in the emergence of an independent, democratic and viable Palestinian state living side by side in peace and security with Israel and its other neighbours."
