SPECIAL UNICEF PROGRAM BEGINS OPERATING IN PALESTINE

(The following has been received today at UN Headquarters from the

Press Officer with the United Nations Mediation Mission in Palestine)

A special UN International Children's Emergency Fund aid program for the refugee children of Palestine began operating on Friday (17 September) within the framework of the general UN aid program for Palestine refugees.

Baron Thiery de Nieuwburgh of Belgium who is in charge of UNICEF supplies for Palestine, disclosed that the first phase of the program will be a sixty-day period of emergency aid for refugees.  Nine hundred tons of supplies will be distributed among the neediest refugee children.  This will be in addition to the 100 tons of mil, sugar, margarine and meat purchased by UNICEF and which has already arrived in Beirut.  More supplies are expected shortly.
