The Secretary-General met today with H.E. Mr. Juan Alfonso Fuentes Soria, Vice-President of Guatemala. The Secretary-General congratulated Mr. Fuentes Soria on his appointment and wished President Maldonado an early recovery. 

The Secretary-General noted that the recent orderly transition in Guatemala was proof of the maturity of its institutions. He welcomed the peaceful and active engagement of civil society in political life as a sign of a strengthened democracy.

They discussed proposed legal reforms to strengthen transparency and the rule of law.  The Secretary-General reiterated the United Nations’ support for the new administration in its efforts to end corruption.     

The Secretary-General praised the work of Commissioner Ivan Velásquez and CICIG in support of justice and the rule of law in Guatemala. The Secretary-General welcomed progress made toward the implementation of the Alliance for Prosperity Plan for the Northern Triangle.
