The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid met today with H.E. Ms. Ināra Mūrniece, Speaker of the Saeima, the Latvian parliament.
President Shahid underlined the essential role of parliaments in implementing international agreements and mechanisms and advocated for closer ties between the UN and national parliaments to strengthen multilateralism.
Speaker Mūrniece expressed deep concern regarding the ongoing war in Ukraine, while emphasizing Latvian Saeima’s efforts to provide assistance to the Ukrainian refugees, tackle disinformation, preserve the rule-based international order as well as to advance sustainable development.
Both sides discussed the importance of youth engagement and that of ensuring gender equality.
The meeting took place in the building of the Latvian parliament in Riga.
