NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,
SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID
United Nations Headquarters, New York

YOUTH MAINSTREAMING IN CRIME PREVENTION POLICIES

Starting with the General Assembly today…

Underway is the high-level meeting on the theme “Enhancing youth mainstreaming in crime prevention policies”. This debate is held in cooperation with the UN Office on Drugs and Crime.

This event is mandated by the General Assembly resolution 76/187 from last December.

In his opening remarks this morning, the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, encouraged the international community to adopt multi-sectoral crime prevention policies and programmes for youth.

What this means, is ensuring safe and supportive environments for young people to prevent their involvement in criminal activities. This also includes initiatives such as skills development, school counselling, and health treatment for substance abuse.

In his remarks, the President noted that young people are disproportionately viewed as the primary perpetrators of crime.

In fact, young people are among the most vulnerable to victimization, particularly gang-related crime, violent extremism, and sexual exploitation. This, while lacking sufficient coverage or protection.

The result of today’s full-day event will be a discussion summary, which will be shared with the Commission on Crime Prevention and Criminal Justice and with all Member States.

I wanted to highlight that in addition to President Shahid, the opening segment also included the Deputy Secretary-General Amina Mohammed and the Executive Director of UNODC Ghada Fathi Waly.

You also heard from World Scouting Youth Representative, Junbert Pabon – who is from the Philippines.

In the afternoon, there will be a panel discussion and a closing session around 5:30PM.

ENVIRONMENT DAY

Over the weekend, the world marked Environment Day.

In his message, President Shahid noted that the Day is a somber reminder that we are not doing

right by our environment. He said if we fail to live sustainably with nature, we risk being extinct.

On this theme, the President will hold a Moment for Nature on 19 July.

RUSSIAN LANGUAGE DAY

Today, meanwhile, is Russian Language Day. There is a video message available on social media, in line with other language days. President Shahid notes that this is one of six official UN languages.

UN languages play a vital role in the work of the United Nations, as well as in communicating with its constituents globally. And urged to celebrate multilinguism as tools for promoting unity, tolerance and harmony between peoples.
