The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. João Gomes Cravinho, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Portugal.
The President thanked Minister Gomes Cravinho for taking part in the High-Level debate on “Enhancing youth mainstreaming in crime prevention policies”.
Minister Cravinho thanked the President for the invitation and briefed the President on Portugal’s priorities on the topic of youth and pledged full support to tackle threats to intergenerational justice, such as climate change and rising sea levels.
Minister Cravinho briefed the President on the upcoming 2022 UN Ocean Conference to be held in Lisbon later this month. Both leaders also complimented the Permanent Representatives of Grenada, H.E. Keisha McGuire, and Denmark, H.E. Martin Bille Hermann, for having worked towards reaching member state consensus on the political declaration for the Ocean Conference.
Minister Cravinho commended the accomplishments of the Presidency of Hope.
President Shahid underscored the importance of multilateralism to overcome the pandemic, climate change, and the ongoing war in Ukraine.
The two leaders also highlighted the success of the Our Common Agenda thematic consultations and noted that the OCA recommendations and related processes would guide the UN into the future.
The meeting took place in the President’s office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
