On 11 March, the President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with Ms. Alice Wairimu Nderitu, Special Adviser of the Secretary-General on the Prevention of Genocide, who briefed the President on her mandate and activities.

The President highlighted the Special Adviser’s key role in alerting and enabling the international community to take timely action to prevent genocide as well as in supporting UN country teams in countering hate speech.

Both sides also discussed issues related to human rights, countering hate speech and promoting tolerance as well as preparations for the upcoming informal high-level meeting, on 18 June 2022, to mark the commemoration of the first International Day for Countering Hate Speech.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
