The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. Zbigniew Rau, Minister of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Poland.
President Shahid and Foreign Minister Rau discussed the ongoing situation in Ukraine. The Minister expressed Poland’s deep concern with the unexpected military aggression against Ukraine and updated the President on the humanitarian situation, including the unabated flow of refugees and third-country nationals to the neighboring countries. The Minister mentioned that Poland alone has received about two thirds or about 1.6 million refugees since 24 February 2022.
President Shahid expressed his deep gratitude for Poland’s efforts and strong humanitarian support extended to the refugees and underlined his strong commitment to use his good offices to ensure the continuous support for humanitarian assistance and to prevent further escalation.
The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
