The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly H.E. Abdulla Shahid met today with the Secretary General of UNCTAD Ms. Rebeca Grynspan. They exchanged views on their common priorities, including rebuilding sustainably from the pandemic, the prioritization of countries in special situations such as LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, and the importance of resilience in sustaining development.
The Secretary General welcomed the President’s reconstitution of the Board of Advisers on LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS, of which UNCTAD is a member. She briefed the PGA on plans for strengthening UNCTAD’s focus on countries in special situations, in line with the outcome of the UNCTAD 15 conference.
The President and the Secretary General exchanged views on the state of financing for sustainable development, and the role that UNCTAD plays. The President briefed the Secretary General on the preparations for his special events on debt sustainability and sustainable tourism to be held during the resumed session. The UNCTAD Secretary General offered her organization’s support for these and other initiatives of the PGA.
The Secretary General also briefed the PGA on plans for UNCTAD’s e-commerce week as well as its upcoming meeting of the Inter-governmental group on Financing for Development. She invited the President of the General Assembly to participate in both. The President agreed and looked forward to his participation.
