The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met on 18 August 2022 with H.E. Mr.Jorge Bom Jesus, Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe.
H.E. Mr. Jorge Bom Jesus highlighted the long-standing relationship with the United Nations, terming it “excellent”. The Prime Minister reaffirmed São Tomé and Príncipe’s unwavering support to international cooperation, the advancement of sustainable development, the fight against climate change and aims to preserve biodiversity as well as the importance of ensuring social indicators for health, education and social protection.
The President of the General Assembly thanked H.E. Mr. Jorge Bom Jesus for supporting his Presidency of Hope. He commended São Tomé and Príncipe’s commitment to conserving nature.
Mr. Shahid noted that São Tomé and Príncipe is on the precipice of graduating to a Middle-Income Country, and drew comparisons with the graduation process of the Maldives.
Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, such as the agenda for the Small Island Developing States, which includes climate change financing, sustainable tourism and the Multidimensional Vulnerability Index for SIDS.
The two also spoke about the need for more women representation in public offices, in the context of STPs recent adoption of the Parity Law, and the importance of education and job opportunities for youth.
Foreign Minister Edite do Ramos da Costa Ten-Juan, and UN Resident Coordinator Eric Overvest also participated in the meeting.
The meeting took place in the Government Palace in Sao Tomein São Tomé and Príncipe.
