The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, called on H.E. Mr. Eglis Levits, President of the Republic of Latvia today.
President Shahid briefed President Levits on the work of the UN General Assembly during these challenging times and the progress made on his priorities set for this session. In relation to climate change, he agreed on the necessity to build on the success of Glasgow COP, while stressing his latest effort to ensure synergies from the various nature related inter-governmental processes by convening the High-Level Thematic Debate entitled “Moment for Nature” on 19 July 2022 in New York.
President Levits underlined Latvia’s strong commitment to multilateralism and to the work of the United Nations, highlighting his country’s dedication to address the challenges of the planet, as well as, in the backdrop of the ongoing war in Ukraine, to preserve the rule-based international order, while upholding the standards of international law.
The discussions also touched on the importance of tackling the challenges stemming from the digital era and ensuring gender equality at the highest level of political decision-making.
The meeting took place in the Riga Castle, Office of the President of the Republic of Latvia in Riga.
