The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid met with H.E. Mr. Adolfo Sabonge, Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS) on 14 July 2022.
The President congratulated Guatemala for its leadership role in advancing regional cooperation under the framework of the Association of Caribbean States.
The Secretary-General stressed that the ACS is the only regional organization that includes all states of the Caribbean Sea and, therefore, approaches common concerns, such as sea conservation from a regional perspective. He also highlighted the Association’s priorities, the need for regional cooperation, and the preparatory work towards the Summit of Heads of State in May 2023.
Both sides also agreed that climate change is a threat that affects all States regardless of their size, economies, or political regimes.
The Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Mr. Mario Adolfo Búcaro Flores, and the Resident Coordinator of the U.N. in Guatemala, Mr. Jose Miguel Barreto, also took part the meeting.
The meeting took place at the National Palace of Culture, Guatemala City.
