The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. Mario Roberto Rojas Espino, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources of Guatemala.
The President congratulated the Minister for the efforts made by the government for promoting green and blue agendas with a view to ensure sustainable development. He commended the actions of the Ministry on protecting the country’s biodiversity, in particular the forests.
The Minister stressed the vulnerability of Guatemala and the Central American region to climate change irrespective of the fact that the region is responsible for very low levels of greenhouse gasses emissions. He also addressed efforts to enhance the protection of water sources.
Both sides discussed other relevant topics such as international cooperation and environmental education and programs to fight pollution.
The Vice-Minister of Climate Change of Guatemala, Mr. Freddy Chiroy, the Vice-Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala, Amb. Shirley Aguilar and the Resident Coordinator of the UN in Guatemala, Mr. Jose Miguel Barreto also attended the meeting.
The meeting took place at the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Guatemala City.
