The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with H.E. Mr. Carlos Alberto Franco França, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil.
The President welcomed Minister França and congratulated Brazil for its outstanding work as President of the Security Council for July. Noting the country’s deep commitment to the promotion of peace through multilateralism, President Shahid further complimented Minister França on the Security Council debate held earlier in the day on the role of strategic communications in United Nations peacekeeping operations.
The Minister thanked President Shahid for engaging with Brazilian authorities and praised the accomplishments of the Presidency of Hope throughout the seventy-sixth session. Minister França also discussed Brazil’s perspective on some of the unforeseen consequences of the war in Ukraine and highlighted the country’s policy to issue humanitarian visas to refugees fleeing the conflict.
Lastly, President Shahid and Minister França discussed the General Assembly resolution on the use of the veto and its impact on debates both in the Security Council and the General Assembly.
The meeting took place in the President’s office at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.
