Readout of the meeting between President of the General Assembly and the President & Chairwoman of “Nadia’s Initiative”

The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr Abdulla Shahid, met today with Ms. Nadia Murad, President & Chairwoman of Nadia’s Initiative and UNODC Goodwill Ambassador.

The President of the General Assembly briefed Ms. Murad on the priorities of his Presidency of Hope, the Five Rays of Hope, and his efforts to implement them through a gender lens. The President also commended Ms. Murad for her courage and determination as a survivor of sexual violence.

During the meeting, issues pertaining to advocacy and ending conflict-related sexual violence was discussed. 

Both sides also touched on the impact of the pandemic in exacerbating sexual violence and need for governments to pay attention to this important issue.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
