NOON BRIEFING HIGHLIGHTS BY PAULINA KUBIAK GREER,
SPOKESPERSON FOR GENERAL ASSEMBLY PRESIDENT ABDULLA SHAHID
United Nations Headquarters, New York

SOFI REPORT

Given our guests, I will start with food insecurity.

This morning, the President of the General Assembly Abdulla Shahid, spoke at the launch of the “State of Food Security and the World 2022” Report, organized by FAO, IFAD, UNICEF, WFP and WHO.

He noted the strains on global food security caused by the COVID pandemic, climate change, environmental degradation, economic stagnation, and the conflict in Ukraine.

During this time, the report can help guide a path to the kinds of interventions and investments needed to achieve a Zero-Hunger targets by 2030.

He said quote “we will only be successful if we work together, share our expertise, pool our resources and collaborate for the greater good.”

The remarks were delivered via a video message. The full text is available at https://www.un.org/pga/76/2022/07/06/launch-of-the-state-of-food-security-and-the-world-2022-report/

TIME CAPSULE

I wanted to let you know about a new initiative.

President Shahid has launched an initiative to capture the hopes of children in a so-called time capsule.

The idea is that each Member State can send two videos of less than 30 seconds from children between the ages of 8 and 15, speaking in their native language.

The question that they would answer is this: “In 2045, the United Nations will turn 100. What is your hope for how the world will look in 23 years – for you, your country and the

world?”

The deadline for submission is Tuesday, 26 July.

ECOSOC ELECTION

Turning to ECOSOC.

The election for the members of the Economic and Social Council will resume on Monday, 11 July, at 3PM in the General Assembly Hall.

UNGA

Looking to September. I’ve been getting a lot of questions about an UNGA 77 speakers list.

The information provided by the Secretariat is that the List of Speakers will be published mid-July, per usual.

QUESTIONS

The Spokesperson confirmed that the same two Member States are still running for the vacant ECOSOC seat – Russia and North Macedonia.

The Spokesperson was asked about plans for UNGA77. She noted that there are no additional details at this time.

The Spokesperson was asked about President Shahid’s travels, and replied that more details would be available in the coming days.
