LISBON/FISHERIES
The President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is wrapping up his official visit to Portugal today.
He spoke this morning at the FAO launch of the State of World Fisheries and Aquaculture Report.
President Shahid said that at a time when food insecurity is a growing concern, ensuring the sustainable use of the oceans resources is vital.
One solution that we must seriously consider is transitioning to more sustainable and environmentally friendly policies and practices.

SIDS
President Shahid also spoke in a pre-recorded message to an event organized by the UN Office for South-South Cooperation. The theme is leveraging South-South and triangular cooperation to advance the Blue Economy Agency in SIDS.
He noted that Small Island Developing States have a special relationship with the ocean, and need genuine and durable partnerships for sustainable development.
And these partnerships must be SMART. That is, they must be:
- SIDS specific,
- Measurable and monitorable,
- Achievable and accountable,
- Resource based and results focused, and
- Timeline-bound, in terms of implementation

BILATERALS
And before leaving Lisbon, President Shahid had bilaterals with Peter Thomson, the Special Envoy for the Ocean.
He also met with Mr. Danny Faure, the former President of Seychelles.
ROAD SAFETY
Looking to tomorrow, the High-level Meeting of the General Assembly on Improving Global Road Safety will start at 10AM in the GA Hall.
And a reminder that there will be a stakeout. We expect to hear from President Shahid.
Mr. Stewart Simonson, who is the Assistant Director General and WHO Director General’s Special Representative for UN Reform.
And from the Secretary-General’s Special Envoy for Road Safety Jean Todt.
That stakeout is expected on Thursday around 11:30 in the morning, in the East Foyer.
QUESTIONS
The Spokesperson was asked if it was possible to remove a Member State. The Spokesperson responded that such a decision would have to be made by the General Assembly, upon the recommendation of the Security Council.
