GENERAL ASSEMBLY

In the General Assembly this morning…

You heard from Ms. Catherine Marchi-Uhel. She is the Head of the International, Impartial, and Independent Mechanism to Assist in the Investigation and Prosecution of Persons Responsible for the Most Serious Crimes under International Law Committed in the Syrian Arab Republic.

Ms. March-Uhel presented the entity’s annual report to the General Assembly under the agenda item “Prevention of armed conflict”.

 

G20 SHERPA

This afternoon, in the General Assembly Hall, there will be a briefing by the G20 Co-Sherpa.

Ambassador Dian Triansyah Djani will brief on the priorities of Indonesia’s G20 Presidency.

In his remarks to this briefing, the President of the General Assembly, Abdulla Shahid, is expected to bring in the discussion held yesterday in the General Assembly informal plenary on world commodities.

The President will speak about the negative impacts of rising debt levels, tightening of financial conditions and shocks to all countries, especially the LDCs, LLDCs and SIDS.

The President is expected to highlight some of the ways that G20 members could accelerate the global recovery by diversifying global economies, and upscaling private-public partnerships.

President Shahid will also make reference to the high-level meeting on vaccines that he convened in recent weeks.

BILATERALS

In advance of the briefing by the G20 Co-Sherpa, President Shahid will meet with Ambassador Djani and with Dr Edi Prio Pambudi, Indonesia’s G20 Co-Sherpas.

In terms of his other bilaterals today.

The President met this morning with Mr. Mario Adolfo Bucaro Flores, Minister of Foreign Affairs of Guatemala.

Very shortly, President Shahid will speak with Ms. Inger Andersen, the Executive Director of UNEP.

Later this afternoon, President Shahid will speak with Mr. Ayman Safadi. He is the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates of Jordan

 

NEXT WEEK

Looking to next week in the General Assembly Hall…

The General Assembly will hold an informal plenary meeting on the situation of human rights in Syria. That will be on Friday, 8 April in the morning.

The High Commissioner for Human Rights, Michelle Bachelet will deliver the interim oral update. She is expected to speak virtually.

Also on Monday, President Shahid will be at Columbia University. He will be speaking to students about multilateralism. Engagement with young people is a top priority for the President.

 

UNITAR

And speaking of youth… Today is Friday, so our HOPE Fellows are in their UNITAR training. Today’s topic is the United Nations and Democracy Building.
