Readout of meeting between President of General Assembly and Executive Director, the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN)

The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met virtually today with Ms. Beatrice Fihn, Executive Director of the International Campaign to Abolish Nuclear Weapons (ICAN).

Ms. Fihn and President Shahid discussed global efforts toward total elimination of nuclear weapons, including through the universalization of the Treaty on the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons (TPNW).

President Shahid reiterated his commitment to advancing nuclear disarmament, including by promoting universal adherence to the TPNW and other relevant treaties. He commended ICAN for its consistent and tireless work in campaigning for the abolition of nuclear weapons. 

He also underlined the importance of involving as many stakeholders as possible, including women, youth and civil society, in the global campaign to abolish nuclear weapons.
