Readout of the meeting between President of the General Assembly and Ms. Ruven Menikdiwela, Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCHR)

The President of the 76^th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr Abdulla Shahid, met with Ms. Ruven Menikwiwela, Director of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCHR)’s Office in New York.

Ms. Menikwiwela briefed the PGA on situation of refugees and displacements around the world and highlighted the challenges confronted by refugees in the face of COVID-19 pandemic and climate change.

The President of the General Assembly recognized the valuable contributions of UNHRC in helping provide durable solutions for refugees and displaced people in need and it’s critical role inspiring hope in millions of people forced from home. He also expressed his commitment and readiness to work with the Agency and exchanged views for closer engagement, 

The meeting took place at the Office of the President of the General Assembly at the United Nations Headquarters.
