The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, today met virtually with Mr. Thomas Bach, President of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).
President Bach pledged the continued support of the IOC to the Office of the President of the General Assembly, including the specific priorities identified in the President’s “five rays of hope” for the 76th session. President Shahid underlined the importance of sports to sustainable development. Discussions also touched on the upcoming GA resolution, “Building a peaceful and better world through sport and the Olympic ideal”.
President Shahid raised the issue of gender equality and how violence against women has increased during COVID times. Both presidents agreed to collaborate on an initiative for ending violence against women, and women’s empowerment. Both sides also agreed on the importance of Covid19 vaccinations for early return to normalcy.
President Shahid conveyed his best wishes to Team IOC for the successful and safe conduct of the Winter Olympic Games in Beijing next February.
