The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met with Ms. Fionnuala Ní Aoláin, Special Rapporteur on the promotion and protection of human rights and fundamental freedoms while countering terrorism. 

Ms. Ní Aoláin pledged her support to the General Assembly and to the Presidency of Hope. She briefed the President about her mandate, including as an entity at the Global Counter-Terrorism Coordination Compact as well as about her report to the third committee.  Special Rapporteur also cited her office’s collaboration with other UN entities, such as the one with Special Representative for Children and Armed Conflict on “Iraq’s lost generation” documentary.   

Both sides discussed at length issues and complexities pertaining to repatriation, rehabilitation and assimilation of children and families of Foreign Terrorist Fighters. They also discussed the need to raise awareness about questions related to respect of human rights while countering terrorism as well as Ms. Ní Aoláin’s  upcoming visit to the Maldives.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
