Readout of meeting between President of General Assembly and the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation of Rwanda, H.E. Vincent Biruta

 The President of the 76th session of the General Assembly, H.E. Mr. Abdulla Shahid, met today with the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Rwanda, H.E. Vincent Biruta 

Foreign Minister Biruta conceyed the support of Rwanda to the Presidency of Hope and the priorities identified by President Shahid for the 76th session.

The President underlined the necessity of achieving vaccine equity by the end of 2022, as the first step to build back better from the consequences of the COVID-19 pandemic. Minister Biruta mentioned that Rwanda would soon be manufacturing COVID19 vaccines with an international partner (BioNTech) which would be used to help vaccinate the continent.

Both sides also discussed other relevant topics, including climate change. The President briefed the Minister on the forthcoming high-level event on climate change that he proposes to organize at the General Assembly on 26 October 2021. Minister Biruta conveyed that Rwanda would support PGAs initiatives on climate change.

The meeting took place in the President’s office at United Nations Headquarters in New York.
