High Level Event Together for Sustainability

12 December 2024, 6:30 PM – 9:00 PM (London) / 1:30 PM – 4:00 PM (New York)

High-Level Event co-hosted by LSE IDEAS, London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE), and United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security (UNTFHS).

About

The United Nations Agenda 2030 and the Sustainable Development Goals identified the private sector as a vital actor in delivering on the vision and the ambition of sustainability and prosperity. The importance of business, government and civil society working collaboratively to harness diverse resources and capabilities in tackling complex societal challenges was highlighted during the COVID-19 pandemic. As we confront the opportunities of the digital revolution but also the risks of climate change, mobilising business engagement in the SDGs requires changes to traditional business and investor models of behaviour. Public expectations and legislation require practices and new skills that go beyond delivering only financial returns and basic compliance, towards generating positive social impacts and bringing tangible benefits to local people and communities. While progress is evident, further guidance is needed to steer this transformative shift via constructive co-operation and collaborations between social actors.

The purpose of this high level event is to share insights and lessons learned through the application of the HSBP Framework, and a human security approach to business-community relations. Bringing together participants from government, the private sector, academia and NGOs, the event will provide an opportunity to discuss how we can move forward together in deepening and extending the sustainability agenda, co-constructing positive and life-changing outcomes in areas where business operates.

The Human Security Business Partnership

Over the last six years, the United Nations Trust Fund for Human Security and LSE IDEAS at the London School of Economics and Political Science have been working together on developing a novel governance approach that can advance multi-stakeholder partnering with business for positive SDG and social impact. The Human Security Business Partnership (HSBP) Framework is a methodology and guidance tool to help companies and investors translate standards on responsibility, accountability and social impact into actions at local level that benefit communities.
