About

The Global Compact for Safe, Orderly and Regular Migration (GCM) is an historic intergovernmental agreement, recognizing that well-managed migration can be a positive and empowering experience, and a source of prosperity and innovation for migrants as well as communities and countries of origin, transit and destination. To translate the vision and ambition of the GCM into concrete action, the Human Security Unit in partnership with the Ministry in charge of Moroccans Residing Abroad and Migration Affairs, Kingdom of Morocco, the UN Country Team in Morocco, the Henry J. Leir Institute for Human Security at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy, and the Aspen Ministers Forum will host a High-Level Side Event during Migration Week in Marrakech, Morocco. The event will highlight concrete examples on how best to reduce vulnerabilities, expand opportunities, and safeguard the dignity of migrants and host communities at all stages of migration.

Human Security & Migration

“Real steps to make migration work for all will reaffirm our commitments to human rights and dignity, countering tendencies towards xenophobia, while strengthening State, public and human security.” –  Making migration work for all (A/72/643)

Realizing the promise of the Global Compact requires tools and approaches to translate its commitments and objectives into actual policies and programmes for migrants and host communities. To this end, the human security approach provides a valuable framework for shaping comprehensive, people-centred and inclusive solutions that bring together a broad range of actors to better advance the benefits of migration while minimizing the risks for migrants and host communities.
