Facilitating Inclusive Dialogues and Decision-Making to Strengthen Social Cohesion Post-COVID 19

Duration: April 2022– November 2024
Budget: US$475,000 (UNTFHS: $450,000; Pooled Funding: $25,000)
Implementing Agencies: OHCHR (lead), UNDP

The populations of small island states in the Pacific region are highly vulnerable to external shocks, impacting all aspects of their lives and livelihoods as well as prospects for sustainable development. The COVID-19 pandemic laid bare these vulnerabilities. As the pandemic’s health, economic, and social impacts manifested in countries surrounding the region, the knock-on effects were severely felt in the Pacific where economies are highly dependent on trade, tourism, and development cooperation. The ripple effects on jobs, incomes, and the provision of social welfare also undermined social cohesion and trust in institutions of governance.

The key objectives of the programme are to: (i) design and roll out human security-based community dialogue platforms to support inclusive and rights-based national development planning and COVID-19 recovery; and (ii) produce and share Pacific experiences demonstrating how the human security approach can improve the development planning process and strengthen social cohesion.
