Addressing Human Security through Integrated Support for Vulnerable and Crisis-Affected Communities in South Kordofan
Duration: February 2023– July 2025
Budget: US$2,341,360 (UNTFHS: $1,600,000; Pooled Funding: $741,360)
Implementing Agencies: IOM (lead), UNMAS
Since the military takeover in October 2021, South Kordofan has experienced growing human security challenges, including reduced access to humanitarian services, population displacement, and rising violence. Ongoing political instability and the mobilization of armed groups have further strained community relations, contributing to inter-communal tensions. Mine contamination continues to limit mobility and disrupt agricultural activities, deepening economic hardship. Climate change has compounded these challenges, shifting mine locations and underscoring the urgency of demining efforts.
The programme aims to promote the human security approach to strengthen resilience and social cohesion among vulnerable and crisis-affected communities in South Kordofan by delivering lifesaving interventions and livelihood opportunities. To this end, it will: (i) implement community-based initiatives to enhance access to basic services and foster a proactive and inclusive environment; (ii) equip at-risk populations with the knowledge to mitigate explosive ordnance (EO) threats, while ensuring the safe use of demined areas; (iii) restore self-sufficiency for vulnerable communities through equitable access to essential resources and services; and (iv) promote the adoption of human security principles among partners and peer organizations to enhance policies and programmes.
