Today, Central Turkana suffers from a ‘climate change-migration-conflict’ nexus. Cycles of severe and recurring drought have resulted in a significant drop in livestock production, increasing competition over scare resources, growing incidences of violent conflicts and lawlessness, high rates of malnutrition and regular outbreaks of communicable diseases due to lack access to adequate water, sanitation and hygiene. -

The programme reduced tensions and improved the living conditions of host communities and refugees in the regions of Turkana and Garissa. Some 250,000 refugees benefitted from better relations with local communities, as well as improved access to basic services and enhanced communal conditions. -

In order to alleviate the impact of drought in north-western and north-eastern Kenya, the programme provided primary healthcare services and food assistance to the most vulnerable and food insecure populations.
