In the lead-up to One Planet's 3rd Global Conference of the Sustainable Food Systems Programme, Christophe Béné - Senior Researcher at the International Center for Tropical Agriculture (CIAT) - shares his views on what he sees is a huge and still increasing challenge of accurately measuring progress and monitoring the Sustainable Development Goals; and how this then relates to the questions around the sustainability of our food systems.

"There is a lot of discussion about how our “food systems are unsustainable” and many agree that “something needs to be changed”. But how many of us have actually tried to measure the sustainability of food systems? In fact, how unsustainable, really, are food systems and can we measure this (un)sustainability?"

The stakes are high, and it is important to make sure that the underlying conceptualization of food system sustainability indices is sound.
