People from around the world came together to watch a spectacular live performance by Italian opera tenor and multi-instrumentalist, Andrea Bocelli, on the first evening of the UNFSS Pre-Summit on 26 July at the Teatro del Opera stage in Circo Massimo.

Bocelli’s first performance was followed by an opportunity to hear from Food Systems Heroes, setting the tone for this ‘people’s summit’ and finishing off the first day of this three-day historical event in Rome.

The performance was followed by remarks made by Food System Hero and Founding Farmer President and CEO of AGREA, Cherrie Atilano, and Food System Hero, Mike Khunga, as they both answered questions around how to achieve Food Systems transformation and the importance of youth involvement and fighting back hunger.

I want my life to be an example and I want to be a role model for every girl out there, every young person out there, and tell them that we need to go and help in transforming our food system.” – Cherrie Atilano, CEO of AGREA

The Deputy Secretary-General of the United Nations, Amina J. Mohammed, joined the conversation and provided her perspective on the Summit and its focus on the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG).

The evening finished off with a few more songs by Bocelli as he performed “O soave fanciulla”, “Brindisi” and “Con te partirò”.
