HIGH COMMISSIONER FOR HUMAN RIGHTS TO VISIT MIDDLE EAST
United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Mary Robinson will travel to the Middle East later this week with a broad based human rights agenda. She will begin with a visit to Israel on 8 November. The High Commissioner will then go to the occupied Palestinian territories keeping in mind the outcome of the Special Session of the Commission on Human Rights held last month. She will also visit Egypt and Jordan.
Mrs. Robinson said today that she will take stock of the human rights situation and explore ideas for instituting and pursuing a dialogue on human rights. 'I plan to convey to the parties the importance of developing a culture of human rights and tolerance, which I believe is the key to a peaceful and stable future in the region ', she said.
Mrs.Robinson will report on her visit to the United Nations General Assembly and to the Commission on Human Rights.
