Kuwait Red Crescent donates $277,000 for Gaza refugee families

Amman, 9 March 2010

Amman – the Kuwait Red Crescent Society (KRCS) has donated $277,000 in response to UNRWA’s 2010 Emergency Appeal for the occupied Palestinian territory (oPT) launched in January of this year. Under the direction of the President of the KRCS, Mr. Barges Hamoud Al Barges, the generous donation is to be distributed as cash assistance for woman-headed families in Gaza whose homes were destroyed by the most recent Israeli assault.

On the occasion of this munificent gesture, Commissioner-General Filippo Grandi applauded the KRCS for its initiative to help UNRWA address the humanitarian crisis in the oPt: “We are deeply appreciative of the Kuwait Red Crescent’s generous donation to assist families in the Gaza Strip who continue to live in debilitating conditions more than a year after the attack on Gaza. Over the last year our partnership with KCRS has developed into one of the most important regional partnerships which UNRWA has, and we are very grateful for that.”

In 2009, the Kuwait Red Crescent embarked upon a new partnership with UNRWA. Aimed at helping to address the dire needs of Palestine refugees in the Gaza Strip, the KRC contributions for UNRWA relief efforts in Gaza amounted to almost $2.4 million in 2009. This is the first KRCS donation received in 2010.
