Illegal Israeli actions in OPT – Letter from Palestine

Identical letters dated 20 June 2002 from the Permanent Observer of

Palestine to the United Nations addressed to the Secretary-General

and the President of the Security Council

Yesterday, Israel, the occupying Power, announced that it is going to “capture” areas under the control of the Palestinian Authority. The Israeli occupying forces have already repeatedly reoccupied parts of the areas referred to above, with the obvious aim of reversing agreements reached by the two sides during the Oslo process. The recent announcement by the Israeli Government, however, proves that intention beyond any doubt, and as such requires serious response by the international community.

The Israeli occupying forces, in implementation of the above-mentioned announcement, have indeed reoccupied parts of some Palestinian cities and appeared to have started establishing permanent military posts. In addition, helicopter gunships fired missiles at two locations in Gaza City and Khan Yunis.

Moreover, Israeli officials are making all sorts of dangerous statements against the Palestinian people and leadership, threatening assassination, displacement and deportation. One Minister, Mr. Michael Kleiner, a known racist, went as far as saying, “for every Jew who is buried as a result of an attack, we must make sure 1,000 Palestinians are killed.” Those statements, again, underline the nature of this Israeli Government and the need for immediate actions by the international community.
