Gaza – Airstrikes

  • Following an incident near Gaza’s security fence on 23 February, tensions between Israel and Palestinian militant groups in Gaza escalated in a heavy exchange of fire, with around 90 rockets fired towards southern Israel, and retaliatory Israeli airstrikes.
  • The airstrikes caused severe damage to infrastructure in Gaza, including main electricity gridlines, and there was reported damage to residential buildings and a playground in Israel. Some civilians were injured on both sides.
  • A  fragile ceasefire was reached in the late hours of 24 February. Israel has closed all crossing points with Gaza, and prohibits the exit of travellers and workers. Fishermen in Gaza have also been prohibited from going to sea. Schools remains closed in Southern Israel.
