DPI HOLDS TRAINING PROGRAMME FOR PALESTINIAN JOURNALISTS

Nine Palestinian journalists from broadcast and print media participated in a  training programme organized by  the Department  of Public Information (DPI), from 19 October to 20 November 1998.

During the programme,  which was designed to strengthen the  participants' professional  capacity  as  information  media  personnel,  the  journalists attended  briefings by officials  of the  United Nations  and United Nations specialized agencies, along  with representatives of media organizations in the United States.

Participants attended two weeks of special classes  at  the  Columbia University School  of International and Public Affairs.  In addition, they received  on-the-job  training  by  serving as temporary United Nations correspondents, covering United Nations meetings and activities on  behalf of their media organizations.

This is the fourth programme being organized by DPI to assist the Palestinian people in building and strengthening their media capability.

The nine journalists who participated in this year's  training programme are:  Wael Ibrahim Abu Dagga, Bureau Chief, Al-Jazeera Satellite Channel; Mohammad Rafiq  Abu-Obeid, Presenter, Radio Al-Manara and News Reader at a local television station; Kawther Mahmoud Taha Al Sharabita, Reporter, Al-Hayat Al-Jadeedah; Adnan Mohammed Abdulfattah Dagher,  Trainer of journalists, Mashael for Journalism and Studies; Hamdi  Farraj, Owner and Director, Bethlehem Media (press office) and Shepherd T.V.; Abed Al-Qader I. Hammad, Editor, Palestinian News Agency WAFA;  Mohammed Hassan Abdelrahim Jouda,  Journalist, Al  Ayyam; Ahmed Tawfiq Abdulhalim Obeid, Editor and Reporter, Palestinian Broadcasting  Corporation (PBC); and Saifeeldin Shahain, Presenter, PBC.
