Consideration of the Commission’s General Report (continued)

The General Committee continued its consideration of the draft of Chapter A of the Commission’s General Report.

Following an exchange of views on the new wording of paragraphs 34, 35 and 36, the CHAIRMAN stated that he would himself prepare a new draft text bringing out more clearly the reasons for the proposal to establish joint committees and giving details of the organization and procedure of those committees.

Paragraphs 39 to 57 were approved subject to certain deletions and minor drafting changes and also a redrafting of paragraph 45 in order to bring out the two separate ideas set forth in that paragraph.

The meeting was adjourned from 12 noon to 2.00 p.m.

When the meeting was resumed, the General Committee, after taking note of the new text of paragraphs 34, 35 and 36 prepared by Mr. Waldo, approved that text. Chapter A as a whole was thus approved.

The Committee than took up consideration of the draft of Chapter B dealing with the question of Jerusalem and the Holy Places.

Paragraphs 1, 2, 4, 5, 7 and 8 were approved subject to a few minor amendments.

It was decided to replace the existing wording of paragraph 3 by a new wording to be based on a draft prepared by Mr. Eralp (Turkey).

As regards paragraph 6, it was decided to include in that paragraph a brief analysis of the Statute of Jerusalem bringing out the main features of the proposed international regime.

The meeting rose at 5.30 p.m.
