COMMUNIQUE

Preliminary exchanges of views between the Conciliation Commission and the Delegations of Israel, Egypt and Lebanon began on 27 April at the Hotel Beau Rivage in Lausanne.

These conversations, which are a continuation of those held from 21 March to 5 April in Beyrouth and on 7 April in Te1 Aviv, will be pursued on 28 April with the Delegation of Syria.

As agreed during the Beyrouth meetings with the Arab delegations and at Tel Aviv with Mr. Ben Gourion, these exchanges of views will cover all questions outstanding between the Arab States and the. State of Israel, with a view to establishing peace in Palestine.

The United Nations Conciliation Commission for Palestine established by the General Assembly, in a Resolution adopted on 11 December 1948 (186th Plenary Meeting) is composed of representatives of three Governments: United States of America (Mr. Mark Ethridge), France (Mr. C. de Boisanger) Turkey (Mr. H.C. Yalcin).

In accordance with the General Assembly’s Resolution, the Conciliation Commission established its official headquarters in Jerusalem on 24 January 1949.

In order to accomplish its general mission of conciliation the Commission began its activities by making contact with the Governments concerned. To this end, it undertook an official tour of visits to the Governments of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Transjordan, Iraq, Syria, Lebanon and Israel, from 12 to 25 February.

By means of those first contacts, the Commission wished to ascertain the manner in which the interested parties contemplated the establishment of relations and the opening of negotiations directed toward a final adjustment of the questions still at issue between them.
