European Commission-supported mosaic project by Palestinian youth and children completed – European Commission press release/Non-UN document

European Union staff and the Palestinian Mosaic Centre Committee celebrate Palestinian Mosaic Art in a Ribbon Cutting Ceremony at Nus Jbeil

In cooperation with the Palestinian Mosaic Centre Committee for the Promotion of Tourism in the Jericho Governorate, the European Commission today celebrated the completion of a project called "Youth Reads History Over Old Stones" at the village of Nus Jbeil, near Nablus in the West Bank.

The project, which lasted nine months with a total budget of €67,500, enabled Palestinian youth and children to discover the art of mosaics. Participants in the project learned to draw and produce mosaics through four training workshops, which were implemented by a number of Palestinian artists.

Speakers at the ceremony praised the EU's ongoing support to the Palestinians. Palestinian Minister of the Commission for the Promotion of Tourism, Sami Musallam, highlighted the importance of this project and hoped the village would receive more support to preserve Palestinian culture.

So far in 2007, the European Commission has provided almost 400 million euros in support to the Palestinians (almost 2.5 billion NIS).
