TURKEY DONATES OVER A MILLION DOLLARS OF FOOD AID TO UNRWA 2ND OCTOBER 2007 The Turkish Government has donated food aid to UNRWA for distribution to the refugees from Nahr El Bared refugee camp in northern Lebanon. The donation, made through the Prime Ministry’s Emergency Management Agency, consists of 200 tonnes of sugar, 200 tonnes of rice, 50 tonnes of red lentils, 50 tonnes of chickpeas and 20,000 litres of olive oil. This assistance is worth an estimated US$ 1.1 million Following the fierce fighting over the summer at the Nahr El Bared camp, over thirty thousand refugees were displaced. To meet their emergency needs over the next twelve months, UNRWA launched an emergency appeal for US$ 55 million. With this money, the Agency will provide temporary shelters, health and education services, create infrastructure necessary for the provision of water and sanitation services, and distribute food to those most affected. The Turkish contribution will greatly assist UNRWA in these urgent efforts and the Agency remains grateful to the government and people of Turkey for their generosity. Ends |
