Statement by the High Representative, Catherine Ashton, on the

incidents of 5 June in the area of separation on the occupied Syrian Golan

Catherine Ashton, High Representative of the European Union for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy and Vice President of the Commission, issued the following statement today:

“I regret any loss of life and injuries of civilians from IDF action in the area of separation on the occupied Syrian Golan on Sunday 5 June. It is important that demonstrations be peaceful and the response measured and proportionate.

Yesterday’s incident could undermine the long-held cease-fire on the Golan. I call on all parties to exercise restraint.Provocative actions like this should be avoided.

The events of 5 June and 15 May emphasize the urgency to resume peace negotiations for a comprehensive and sustainable resolution of the Arab-Israeli conflict. The EU stands ready to do everything possible to help all parties choose the path of peace and engage in successful negotiations.”
