The status of the Palestinian mission in Finland is revised

Press Release 185/2013
4 September 2013

Foreign Minister Erkki Tuomioja and Ambassador Nabil D.M. Alwazir signed an agreement on the status of the Palestinian mission in Helsinki on 4 September. The agreement grants the Palestinian mission and its staff the privileges and immunities laid down in the Vienna Convention regulating diplomatic relations.

The upgrading of the Palestinian mission is based on an agreement made by the Nordic countries that the status of Palestinian missions in all of the Nordic countries would be as uniform as possible.

Finland also wants to support the Palestinian state-building efforts and to encourage the continuation of talks with Israel, started under the leadership of President Mahmoud Abbas, in order to achieve a two-state solution.

Upgrading the status of the mission does not signify the recognition of the Palestinian state.
