Early in 2011, the UN Secretary-General outlined a five-year action plan to build “the future we want,” one that is safer, more secure, more sustainable and more equitable.

A number of critical imperatives lay at the heart of this plan: sustainable development; preventing and mitigating conflicts; preventing human rights abuses; minimising the impacts of natural disasters; building a safer and more secure world; supporting countries in transition; and working to engage the talents of women and young people.
