Readout of the Secretary-General’s Meeting with Ehud Barak

The Secretary-General met with Israeli Deputy Prime Minister and Defence Minister Ehud Barak this afternoon.

They discussed a range of issues, including Lebanon and the situation in Gaza, on which the Secretary-General underscored the importance of a further easing of the closures.

The Secretary-General stressed the need to continue Israel's restraint on settlement activity and to extend it to East Jerusalem, among other steps that could help efforts to proceed to meaningful direct talks between the parties.

The Secretary-General and the Deputy Prime Minister also had a separate private conversation.
