UN Envoy Mladenov Meets Muslim Religious Authorities in Jerusalem

Jerusalem, 16 June 2015

United Nations Special Coordinator for the Middle East Peace Process, Mr. Nickolay Mladenov met this morning with His Eminence Sheikh Abdul Azim Salhab, Chairman of the Waqf Council, and Sheikh Azam Abed Alkhatib Altamimi, Director of Jerusalem Waqf Department.

They agreed on the need to respect the Jordanian custodial authority and status quo over the Holy Sites in Jerusalem. ”As the Holy Month of Ramadan approaches, I call on all parties to refrain from provocations that could escalate tensions in and around the Al-Aqsa Compound,” Special Coordinator Mladenov said. “I encourage the Israeli authorities to lift access restrictions for Palestinian worshippers to their Holy Sites in Jerusalem,” he added.
