Message from Minister Fini to Israeli Prime Minister Olmert on new Israeli Govt – Italian Foreign Affairs Ministry press release/Non-UN document

Message from Minister Fini to the Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert

8 May 2006 – Deputy Premier and Minister for Foreign Affairs Gianfranco Fini sent the following message today to the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Olmert:
“I wish to convey my warmest congratulations on the formation of the new Israeli Government and on your confirmation as Prime Minister of the State of Israel. I wish you every success in this high office that has been entrusted to you.
The formation of your government coincides with an indubitably sensitive phase of the peace process. The international community must continue to work to promote the re-launch of negotiations; the indispensable condition for which was and continues to be Hamas's rigorous abidance by the three well-known conditions set by the Quartet.
For Italy the promotion of an area of stability, democracy, peace and mutual comprehension in the nearby Mediterranean and Middle East is a priority objective of our foreign policy. The Government to which I belong has worked tirelessly for this result. We have striven to build even more solid and lasting foundations for the traditional ties of friendship that bind Italy and Israel, and we cannot but be satisfied with the quality of our rapport that has attained a degree of excellence that perhaps has never been achieved before now.
In the future too, I am certain of Italy's continued unflagging commitment to help overcome what are unfortunately many obstacles that lie on the path to achieving an equitable, just and lasting peace in the Middle East”.
