Declaration by the Presidency of the European Union on the elections in Lebanon

Minister of Foreign Affairs Bernard Bot, speaking as President of the Council of Ministers of the European Union, stated that the European Union closely follows the preparation for the presidential elections in Lebanon this autumn. He expressed his confidence that these elections would be carried out in accordance with the rule of law, including respect for the Lebanese constitution. He recalled that respect for democratic principles is an essential element of EU's relations with associated countries. Minister Bot said that by upholding those principles, Lebanon would remain faithfull to its best democratic traditions. The European Union stresses the importance of respecting the sovereignty and independence of Lebanon.
